If I Say
If I say
you have an effect on me electric sometimes,
rarely indifferent,
frequently scalding If I say
I like the way you taste
red apple tart,
cherry juice sweet, mint pie fresh
If I say you are so flavorful
If I say I close my eyes and I am in your arms all wrapped up in coconut brown, fireplace warm, oaktree sturdy If I say mmmmm.... |
Favorite Things
you left
your favorite cuts
of Sweet Honey in the Rock on my nightstand.
you left your purple tie
and multi-colored versions of your opinion,
along with various works -in -progress.
the scent of your favorite oil
permeates
all my daily wear
lingers hauntingly
throughout my life
but it was never enough.
I had to know.
do you want me?
do you need me? do you love me?
do ya -do ya -do ya -do ya -do ya?
so I worried you and I worried me,
until you took your copy
of all your favorite things
and left. |
Can I
Can I paint pictures of you?
shades of red
indigo blue
draw words that shape curve
along your spine
pencil brow wrinkled sighs
that balloon from your lips paint dusk
in your eyes...
Can I write a love poem ...
about you?

Midnight
Long about midnite when the moon is a funnel for the stars
when the light of years and the bright of revelation
and all the fire in the universe pours into one beam,
pours into us and our two bodies bathe in moonbeam magic
glow sweat glow oh yes
The night becomes a whisper,
a sweet, warm mist covering our faces with promised adventure
and we take to the Nile on a barge of roots
lured by luminous waves of mystical wet rhyme
lapping the firm dark shores of our world. First.
oh yes oh yes
We kiss.
A smooth and tender probe in the hollow of our necks,
wetting the loin of our memory and we take the night train
oh yes we take the a-train
oh yes we take the el-train
oh yes we take glory bound and hallelujah
oh yes we go UNDERGROUND and we take Coltrane
oh yes
through clouds of shaded dust,
through hues and tinted shades of us,
the fire-stoked engines roar and we are
fast framed in our passenger eyes,
night-streaking colors of steamy love,
bruised and hardened purple love,
torn white sheets and pulse-beat red remembering captured love
oh yes
in shantys and lean-to's;
magnolia bloomed in cotton fields
aching ... aching ...
oh yes to rock awhile soft the time passing in our wake.
We after-taste mango and berry wine, piquant with the salt sweat
from our embrace.
We burn coconut oil on papaya leaves and inhale the aroma hypnotic.
Sated hours stretch and yawn like sleek black panthers, lean and full,
preening and padding precious minutes into purrrr...ing moments as we make love into curious and tomorrow becomes a rainbow,
a rolling, liquid mirror for our ceremonies, private,
long about midnite.

Crystals
Crystals
catch rainbows in the yellow sun Hot. Flash pink Warm. Taste orange Pungent, squishy picnic browns and fragrant lakeside greens a cool silhouette to day keep a cozy for our dreams Starlings sound a trilogy of love and us and harmony while somewhere soft and gentle blows a lover's wind
Touching pollen silk to your face teasing me to dare and taste delicate licks of lilac while in the sky a thousand times beneath the sun forever our rainbow colors merge as one henceforth and ever
Crystals like you catch rainbows like me in the yellow sun

On Robins' Wing
On robins' wing we touched and teased from sacred pillow puffs a gentle laughing splashing rain wetting junebugs in buttercups
On robins' wing
we touched and soared
against a blue sky flush
and tried our dreams
on robins wing loving o so much
like sugar bees in honey trees that harvest clover wine in meadows green throughout each spring a promise for all time my hand your heart
our spirit realm evoking dejavu where mountains echo in the night you ... you ... you ...

Valentine
Shall I draw you from the dawn
of a burning morning sun
with stars eclipsed and night undone
Shall I tease the shadows from your sleeping face
and revel in the wondrous taste
of daylight's soft and warm embrace;
that pales in every possible way
with the wondrousness of you
your touch, your sigh as daylight breaks
I am dazzled by the view
now and always by your side
in total awe of you.

The Dilemma
my head says write about it
now
while the pain is fresh and raw
but my heart says no
one more tear
and repair
is
out
of the question |
haiku 12: lovin'
your mouth, sweet cushion
melon sweet promise of taste
our now, beginning
haiku 14: for fats waller
a garden of notes
leapfrog from his lush pond throat
crickets chirp applause
haiku 9: wanting
my mind wandered here
to where i find you sleeping
coveted by dreams
haiku 27: hope
journey to my heart
you will find my soul waiting
patiently ... for you.

T-ball Got The Cooties (A Timeless Tale)
t-ball got the cooties from sha-sha
who got 'em from big willy
who got 'em from ree-ree
who got 'em from ray-paul
who got 'em from sharon
who mixed 'em
with the moistness in her throat
and spit 'em in a kiss
to the lover who most pleased her.

Her Only Way Out
(for the second shift waitress at O'Charley's)
She understood
her only way out was to capture a heart
hold it tight until it bled for her
til she could run away with it
to wherever it might take her.
For this, she shed pounds
like skin from giant reptiles.
She moistened her skin,
and lavished her pores with scented oils
and garden sweet peach soaps.
Frequently, her fire smiled.
In the vacinity of, or directly for,
all men
but one man, in particular
whose apron stained days and calloused feet
were a perfect fit for her empty space
He was warmed by her smile
and followed the blazing trail of her
until he touched her fire
then
he, defending his life,
leapt screaming,
out of the path of flames,
leaving her only way out
smoking
and smouldering
and ash.

Charmin' Marvin
I wanna tell ya bout a man
Just as quick as I can
But I cain't leave nuthin out
He's Charmin Marvin
He hails from Dalton
He's cool; there ain't no doubt.
He's tall and lean and chocolate cream
Got a smile to make your knees go weak
He's a mover and a doer and a shake yo body groover
Make a strong gal mild and meek.
If there's rappin to be done
Charmin Marvin is the one
He's a country boy through and through
He can take you by the hand
And with his words BODY SLAM
And you won't know what hit you.
If you're lookin for some fun
Charmin Marvin is the one
Oh, the things that this man knows
He's got a touch to make you giggle
Then your body starts to wiggle
All the way down to your toes.
'Cause he's Charmin Marvin
He hails from Dalton
And he'll get cha if ya don't watch out
He's got a line so smoothe
You won't be able to move
Don't cha know what I'm talkin about.
Don't cha know what I'm talkin about.
Don't cha know? Don't cha know?
Don't you know what I'm talkin about.

Foolish Woman
I have been a foolish woman
lured by your smile
your touch so light
a summer breeze
grows jealous
I have been
a foolish woman
Running to the night
breathless as I unfold
eager to find
anxious to spill
all my womaness
at your request
Your scent is in my pores
I am made drunk
by your smell
At your touch
I am molten
integral pieces of me
have burned away
and you have offered
no cooling spring
to fast replenish
my loss
I have been a foolish woman
and I cry
foolish
I
taste salt
when we kiss

Selectric Love
You met me in the parking lot
introduced yourself
at my front door
I met you in my dining room
fully charmed by your
front door ploy
Seated by my typewriter
you watched me hunt and peck
volunteered your wisdom
offered visions of Tibet
extolled the virtues of honesty
until I honestly left
my keyboard
Stepped I with you,
a charming prince
into the forest green
entranced by liquid pools of truth
but for a ripple in the stream
abrupt you were and eager
before morning to depart
lest yellow sun and dawning
unwrap your cloak of dark
For hidden in your manner
was an urgent need for flight
to keep your secret midnight things
from your charming Other Life
My fingers sought the keyboard
old song, old lover, old friend
and I continue to hunt and peck
and write of love again

Love Poem #89
Swallows and redwings chirp gaily in my left ear
regattas and preludes swoosh speedily by my right
and there you are
in the middle of my forehead
a worrisome gnat with nothing better to do
than distract me
from all other things in life
demanding my attention
like great stars winking in the night
drawing my concentration
like cool spring water on a sweltering day
forcing my eyes to the door
through which you came or went last
leaving or bringing your arrogant smell
and cocky air
I think of all the things I could do
but don't
because I'm too busy thinking about you
and I remember what you said
about a thin line between loving and hating
and how I once said I understand
but I didn't
until now
I do.

For my eternal love, my daughter, my life
Dee Dee's Laugh
Dee Dee's laugh is a gateway into a thousand other worlds where pixies bathe in dew drops and green grass flows like rivers over hills and to the mountain tops cascading into forests deep within the bowels of a sacred ground where the earth is wet already from her tears
